Ahrefs free trial: no trial, but a free account and free tools

Looking for an Ahrefs free trial? Ahrefs says it doesn't offer one. What it does offer: Ahrefs Free, a free account with no card and no end date for the sites you own, plus free tools that need no account. Here's what each one lets you do, and where it stops, from Ahrefs' official pages read on 29 October 2026.

Ahrefs free trial alternative: a key that opens your own site, not your rivals'
By Jérémy Santos Updated on 30 October 2026

This page is part of the guide: Ahrefs alternative

You want to try Ahrefs before you pay. Fair enough. Here’s the short version: there’s no trial, but there’s more free Ahrefs than most people think.

Every fact about Ahrefs below comes from its official pages, read on 29 October 2026. I didn’t test Ahrefs on an account. The one tool I tested for real is SemChat, on 29 October 2026, and its buttons on this page are affiliate links: I earn a commission if you subscribe, at no extra cost to you.

Does Ahrefs have a free trial? The short answer

No. Ahrefs’ help center says it plainly: “We don’t provide any free trials, but you can check out our free account”. So there are three ways to use Ahrefs without paying, and none of them is a trial of the paid plans.

Free option Credit card Time limit Where it stops
Ahrefs Free (account) No None Your own verified sites only
Free tools, no account No None mentioned A sample: first 100 keyword ideas, first 20 backlinks
SEO Toolbar (browser) No None mentioned DR and UR only with a free account

Is Ahrefs free at all? What the official pages say

Yes, in part. The pricing page FAQ puts it this way: “We never run discounts. But if you’re a website owner, you can sign up for Ahrefs Free.” And the Ahrefs Free page adds two words that settle it: “Not a trial”.

The same help article explains that annual billing is the only saving. It says “almost 20% off all annual billing”, while the pricing page says “save up to 17%”. In practice, you pay 10 months for 12. There are no promo codes either.

Old Ahrefs trial offers you may still read about online

Search for an Ahrefs free trial and you’ll find pages that promise one. The top article in our results, from DemandSage, is titled “Exclusive 7 Days Access”. Ahrefs’ own help center, dated 3 September 2026, says it provides no free trials. Trust the official page; if you see an offer elsewhere, check it on ahrefs.com first.

Refunds are no safety net either. The pricing page says “Ahrefs does not issue refunds in general”. On a monthly plan, you can ask if you didn’t use the account; Ahrefs may refuse after significant activity.

Ahrefs Free: what the free account covers

Ahrefs Free costs €0, asks for no card and has no end date. It used to be called Ahrefs Webmaster Tools. The deal is simple: you get real Ahrefs data, but only about sites you prove you own.

Ahrefs free plan: your own verified sites, no card, no time limit

For each site you verify, and you can verify as many as you like, Ahrefs Free gives you:

  • Site Explorer: your backlinks and the keywords you rank for, 1,000 visible at a time.
  • Site Audit: a technical check of your pages, with 5,000 crawl credits a month per project.
  • Web Analytics: a visitor counter, up to 1 million events per project.

On top of that come a few extras: Social Media Manager (in beta), AI Content Helper (1 document a month), Report Builder (1 report a month) and the SEO Toolbar.

Who Ahrefs Free suits, and who it doesn’t

Ahrefs Free suits you if you have one or a few sites of your own and want to see their links, the keywords they rank for and their technical issues, with Ahrefs data, at no cost.

It doesn’t suit you if your real question is “what are my competitors doing?”. That’s the part Ahrefs keeps for paying customers, and it’s often why people search for an Ahrefs free trial in the first place.

Verifying your site to unlock the free account

To use Ahrefs Free, you prove the site is yours. When you create a project, Ahrefs offers to connect your Google Search Console account. The full list of verification methods isn’t detailed on the pages we read: missing data (planned source: Ahrefs help center on project verification).

If you don’t have Search Console yet, set it up first. It’s free, it’s Google’s own data, and most tools, Ahrefs and SemChat included, can read it.

Ahrefs free version vs paid plans: what is missing

The free version leaves out the tools most people want Ahrefs for. Per Ahrefs’ blog, Keywords Explorer and Rank Tracker are “not included in Ahrefs Free”. The assistant, Ask Ahrefs, is “Not available on Free or Starter plans”, and neither is the MCP server.

Feature Ahrefs Free Starter (€27 a month) Lite (€119 a month)
Your own verified sites Yes Yes Yes
Competitors’ sites No 1 unverified project 5 unverified projects
Keywords Explorer No Yes Yes
Rank Tracker No 50 keywords 750 keywords
Ask Ahrefs assistant No No Yes, free during the beta

Prices are in euros, before tax, as read from France on 29 October 2026. The full breakdown is on our Ahrefs pricing page.

Running a site audit with a free Ahrefs account

This is where Ahrefs Free is most useful for a small business. Site Audit promises to “Identify, prioritise, and fix 170+ SEO issues”: titles, indexing, links, redirects, structured data, Core Web Vitals. Ahrefs’ FAQ says it “categorises issues by severity and explains how to fix them”.

The limit is 5,000 crawl credits a month per project. Whether that covers your whole site depends on its size: the cost per page isn’t stated on the pages we read.

Getting there takes four steps:

  1. Sign up for Ahrefs Free, with no card.
  2. Create a project for your site.
  3. Prove the site is yours, for example by connecting Search Console when Ahrefs offers it.
  4. Run Site Audit, then open the issues marked most severe first.

What you get is a list of issues, sorted. What you don’t get, on the free account, is someone to tell you in plain words which three to fix this week. That’s the job of an assistant, and Ask Ahrefs starts with Lite.

Ahrefs free tools that need no account

Ahrefs keeps a set of free tools anyone can use, no sign-up needed. They show a slice of the data: enough to get a feel, not enough to work with every day.

Type any domain, yours or a competitor’s, and the Backlink Checker shows its first 20 backlinks. It’s a free way to peek at a rival’s links with Ahrefs data.

Ahrefs Keyword Generator: free keyword ideas

Type a topic and the Keyword Generator lists ideas, the first 100 of them. That’s often enough to find the words your customers use. For volumes on every idea, filters and history, you need Keywords Explorer, which starts with Starter.

Website Authority Checker and Domain Rating

The Website Authority Checker shows a site’s Domain Rating, or DR: Ahrefs’ authority score for a whole domain. It’s useful to compare yourself with a competitor at a glance. Ahrefs also lists a Keyword Difficulty Checker, a SERP Checker and an AI Visibility Checker among its free tools.

The Ahrefs SEO Toolbar for Chrome, Firefox and Safari

The SEO Toolbar is a free browser extension. It shows a page’s structure, its outgoing links, indexing and redirects, and, with a free account, DR and UR. You don’t need to verify a site to use it. Full metrics in the toolbar need a paid plan.

What you cannot do for free: research your competitors

Ahrefs draws the line in its own FAQ: “you can’t research competitors’ sites without paying”. The free tools give you a sample. The free account only covers your sites.

Ahrefs’ FAQ names two reports for this: Content Gap and Link Intersect. They compare your site with your competitors’ keywords and links. Both sit in paid plans.

On the cheapest one, Starter, you get 1 unverified project, so one competitor’s site at a time, and 200 credits a month. Ahrefs’ FAQ warns that credits “can feel restrictive if you run frequent keyword or competitor lookups”.

Keyword research and rank tracking: also behind the paywall

Two more gaps matter for a small business. Without Keywords Explorer, you can’t look up the volume and difficulty of every keyword idea; the free Keyword Generator gives you a sample. Without Rank Tracker, you can’t follow your positions week by week inside Ahrefs.

For your own site, Site Explorer on the free account still shows the keywords you rank for. Search Console, which is free, shows your clicks and positions too. Together, they cover the basics.

When paying for Ahrefs makes sense

Pay when you’ll use the data every week. If you work on backlinks, follow several markets or report to clients, a paid plan pays off. Ahrefs’ own wording: Lite is “Essential data for small businesses and personal projects”.

As read from France on 29 October 2026, before tax:

  • Starter: €27 a month, monthly only. Keywords Explorer and Rank Tracker, no assistant.
  • Lite: €119 a month, or €99.17 billed yearly. Ask Ahrefs and the MCP server included.

Ahrefs’ blog and help center quote US dollars ($29 for Starter, $129 for Lite). The pricing page as seen from the United States: missing data (planned source: Ahrefs pricing page read from the US). ### Cancelling: you go back to Ahrefs Free

If you subscribe and then cancel, you don’t lose everything: the account goes back to Ahrefs Free. Ahrefs takes Visa, Mastercard, American Express and UnionPay.

Free elsewhere: Semrush, Ubersuggest and a real trial at SE Ranking

If what you wanted from an Ahrefs free trial was a look at competitors, other tools let you do it for free, within limits. Facts from each tool’s official pages:

Tool Free plan Trial What free gives you
Semrush Yes, “No credit card required” 7 days, card required “1 demo project”, “10 reports per day across all vital tools”
Ubersuggest Yes, no time limit 7 days, card required 3 searches a day, 1 project, 25 tracked keywords, 150-page audit a week
SE Ranking No 14 days, no card Up to 10 projects and 750 tracked keywords during the trial
Ahrefs Yes, Ahrefs Free None Your own verified sites only

SE Ranking is the only one here with a trial and no card: “There’s no permanent free plan, but you can evaluate the platform with a free 14-day trial (no card required)”. Sources: Semrush pricing page and SE Ranking FAQ, read 30 October 2026; Ubersuggest help article updated 26 July 2025.

Semrush Free is the closest to what people expect from an Ahrefs free trial: you can look at any competitor, 10 reports a day. Rank tracking stops at 1 site and 10 keywords. Its trial, by contrast, asks for a card, disables exports and charges you at the end unless you cancel.

Ubersuggest’s free plan has no time limit but is tight: 3 searches a day. Its MCP server and ChatGPT app work with a free account; the plan changes how much data comes back, not which tools run.

SE Ranking has no free plan, but its trial is a real one: 14 days, up to 10 projects, no card. It also keeps free tools on its site, such as a Website Authority Checker and a Google Rank Checker with a few free checks a day.

More on each: Semrush free and Ubersuggest free.

SemChat Free next to Ahrefs Free

SemChat works the other way round. Instead of reports to read, you ask a question and get an answer about your site. Its pricing page says: “Every feature, in every plan. Just pick your monthly usage.” The Free plan costs €0: “Try semchat with no credit card”.

SemChat’s assistant on the Free plan, and what a full audit costs

On 29 October 2026, I typed one sentence on the Free plan, asking for an SEO audit and an action plan. In about 3 minutes, SemChat checked 89 positions, 30 top pages, the backlink profile and 10 competitors. It gave me 3 actions for the week and found a real error: a contact page that returned a 404.

The catch: that one audit used 100% of the Free plan’s monthly quota. Usage is counted in tokens, and the quota resets each month.

SemChat Usage screen showing the monthly Free plan quota completely used up

The Usage screen after the audit: the Free plan quota is used up (French interface). Screenshot of the SemChat app (Jérémy’s account, Free plan), 29 October 2026.

Ahrefs Free SemChat Free
Price €0, no card €0, no card
Your own site Yes, once verified Yes
Competitors No, per Ahrefs’ FAQ Yes, 10 on my test
Assistant No (Lite and up) Yes
Limit Per tool (crawl credits, rows) Monthly usage quota

What SemChat Free doesn’t do matters too. Rank tracking isn’t mentioned on its pages, and visibility in AI engines is planned with no date. It has no link index of its own: in France, it uses Haloscan data, and SemChat and Haloscan have the same publisher, ARCHI301. Elsewhere, its data sources aren’t named. It connects to Search Console, which I tested, and to GA4, Bing Webmaster Tools, WordPress, Webflow and others.

SemChat review and SemChat prices

If one audit a month isn’t enough, Starter costs €20 a month before tax, or €16 billed yearly. All plans are on our SemChat pricing page, and the full test, step by step, is in our SemChat review.

Still weighing your options? Our Ahrefs alternative guide compares the tools by budget. Bottom line on the Ahrefs free trial: there isn’t one, but Ahrefs Free on your own site and a few free checkers will take you a long way before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

No. Ahrefs' help center says "We don't provide any free trials" (article dated 3 September 2026, read 29 October 2026). Instead, it points you to Ahrefs Free, a free account for the sites you own, with no card and no end date.

Which Ahrefs free checkers need no account?

Ahrefs lists Keyword Generator (the first 100 ideas), Backlink Checker (the first 20 backlinks), Keyword Difficulty Checker, SERP Checker, Website Authority Checker and AI Visibility Checker, among others. You type a domain or a word and get a sample of the data.

What is the best free alternative to Ahrefs?

It depends on what you need for free. To study competitors, Semrush Free gives 10 reports a day. Our Ahrefs alternative guide compares them.

Can you check Domain Rating for free?

Yes. Domain Rating (DR) is Ahrefs' authority score for a whole site. The free Website Authority Checker shows it, and the free SEO Toolbar for Chrome, Firefox and Safari shows DR and UR with a free account.
