GEO vs SEO: how to show up in AI answers, not just on Google

GEO vs SEO, the short answer: SEO gets your site ranked in Google's list of results; GEO helps it get cited inside answers written by AI, such as ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews. It isn't a second job. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in its AI features (read October 30, 2026): solid SEO is still the foundation.

GEO vs SEO: a sloth waters one plant that feeds two different signposts
By Jérémy Santos Updated on October 30, 2026

You ask ChatGPT a question. It answers in three paragraphs and cites two websites. Google’s AI Overviews do the same. GEO vs SEO comes down to one question: how do you become one of those cited sites? Good news: the groundwork is still SEO.

GEO vs SEO: the difference in plain words

SEO aims for a spot in a list of results. GEO aims for a spot inside a written answer. The research paper that coined the term puts it this way: GEO is meant “to aid content creators in improving their content visibility in generative engine responses” (arXiv, read October 30, 2026).

SEO GEO
Where you show up Google’s list of results An answer written by AI (ChatGPT, AI Overviews)
What you win A ranking and a click A citation, sometimes with a link
Who reads your page Google’s crawler Search crawlers, including AI ones such as OAI-SearchBot
What Google asks Its usual best practices No additional requirements, per Google

GEO SEO: when people mean AI search, not maps

“GEO SEO” and “SEO GEO” can confuse: in the US, “geo” often means geographic, as in local search. If that’s what you need, read our guide to local SEO for small business. Here, GEO means generative engine optimization, a term from “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization,” a paper by six researchers posted on arXiv on November 16, 2023.

What SEO delivers, what GEO adds

Classic search

  • a list of pages
  • you pick where to click

An AI-written answer

  • a text that answers right away
  • a few sites cited as sources
Yesterday a list of links; today also a written answer that cites a few sources. arXiv paper on GEO and Google Search Central documentation, read October 30, 2026.

GEO adds one thing to check: can AI crawlers read your pages? OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers” (OpenAI crawler page, read October 30, 2026).

AEO and AIO: the other labels

You’ll also see AEO (answer engine optimization) and AIO. I read no official definition of either from Google or OpenAI. Treat them as agency labels for the same goal, not as standards.

What doesn’t change: one site, one strategy

Google, in its own words: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” And: “You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features” (Search Central, read October 30, 2026).

What SemChat does for GEO today, and what is only announced

SemChat is the AI SEO assistant I test on this site; its links are affiliate links. For GEO, keep what I saw apart from what is promised.

SemChat table checking each AI crawler's access in a robots.txt file

SemChat’s technical audit checks which AI crawlers may read the site, October 29, 2026 (French interface). It puts PerplexityBot on line 13; it is on line 12 (line 13 is Google-Extended), checked in the robots.txt that day.

The AI readability check in its technical audit

On October 29, 2026, I asked SemChat, in French, whether ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity could read a page on plugkit-avis.com. Checked by hand afterward: it read the robots.txt correctly (GPTBot line 7, OAI-SearchBot line 8, ChatGPT-User line 9), found the llms.txt file and the right Article and FAQPage markup.

SemChat technical audit listing the tools it ran and its summary with proof

SemChat’s technical audit for AI assistants: tools run, then a summary with proof, October 29, 2026 (French interface).

Two misses as well: its “one fix to make first” changed nothing about access, and it claimed with no source that Copilot’s share is growing. Always double-check.

Tracking in AI engines: announced, no date given

SemChat’s GEO is announced as planned, with no date (email from Adrian Delmarre of Haloscan, October 29, 2026). Missing data: when that tracking ships (planned source: SemChat). My full test is in the SemChat review.

AI Overviews SEO: what Google’s AI answers change for your site

An AI Overview is the summary Google sometimes writes above its results, with links to the pages behind it. No dated study quoted here measures its effect on your clicks. The details are in our guide to AI Overviews SEO.

How to rank in ChatGPT: what makes it cite a website

Let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, publish clear pages, keep your brand consistent across the web. OpenAI doesn’t publish how ChatGPT picks its sources. The steps are in our guide on how to rank in ChatGPT.

ChatGPT for SEO: ChatGPT or SemChat, which one for your site

ChatGPT is a strong writing partner: ideas, outlines, titles, proofreading. SemChat starts from measured data, such as your connected Search Console, and returns an action plan. The head-to-head is on our ChatGPT for SEO page.

SEO agent: what an AI agent does on its own, and what it leaves to you

An agent takes a goal and picks its own steps. On October 29, 2026, from one sentence, SemChat ran about ten tools and returned an action plan in about 3 minutes, then handed control back. What a true agent changes is on our SEO agent page.

AI search optimization: simple steps to show up in AI answers

Open access to crawlers, put the answer first, cite your sources, get mentioned elsewhere. Nobody can guarantee a citation. The steps are in our guide to AI search optimization.

Generative engine optimization (GEO), explained without jargon

The paper behind the term reports visibility gains of “up to 40%” on its own benchmark. That’s a lab result, not a promise for your site. The full story is on our generative engine optimization page.

GEO vs SEO, in short: let crawlers read your site, answer clearly, and keep doing your SEO. You don’t need two strategies.

Frequently asked questions

What does GEO stand for in SEO?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization. The term comes from the research paper "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization," posted on arXiv on November 16, 2023, which describes it as a way to help content creators improve their visibility in generative engine responses (read October 30, 2026).

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

Both are labels used by agencies and tool vendors. GEO has a source: the 2023 research paper that named it. I read no official definition of AEO (answer engine optimization) from Google or OpenAI, so treat it as a label, not a standard. In practice, both point to the same groundwork: pages that are easy to read and quote.

Is SEO dead or evolving with AI in 2026?

Evolving. Google writes that "the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features in Google Search" and that there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode" (Search Central, read October 30, 2026). I quote no AI usage figure here: I read no named, dated study.

Does SemChat track my visibility in AI answers?

No, not today. SemChat's GEO is announced as planned, with no date (email from Adrian Delmarre of Haloscan, October 29, 2026). What I tested on October 29, 2026 is its technical audit: it checks which AI crawlers can read your site, with proof, and it made two mistakes I caught by hand.
