Surfer SEO vs SemChat: two jobs, writing and diagnosing
Surfer SEO vs SemChat, the short answer: they don't do the same job. Surfer SEO helps you write: an editor scores your text as you type, and its AI can draft the whole article. SemChat helps you diagnose: you ask in plain words what is holding your site back, it runs the audit, reads your backlinks and hands you an action plan. Surfer has no free plan and its trial needs a card. SemChat has a Free plan at €0 with no card, but one full audit used up its monthly quota in our test on October 29, 2026.

Verdict
Surfer and SemChat don't compete for the same task. Surfer is a content editor: it scores each text in real time against Google's top 10 and the pages AI tools cite, drafts articles in 29 languages and tracks your brand in ChatGPT or Gemini answers. SemChat is an assistant that diagnoses: technical audit, backlinks, competitors and an action plan, all from one sentence. You publish a lot of content: Surfer. You first need to know what to fix on your site, without a credit card: SemChat.
Choose Surfer if
- You write a lot of content and want an editor that scores every text in real time against Google's top 10 and the pages AI tools cite.
- You want AI to draft an optimized first version of an article in about 3 minutes, in English or one of 28 other languages.
- You want to track every day what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI answers say about your brand (AI Search Analytics, Pro and above).
- You publish on WordPress, Google Docs or Contentful and want to send your drafts there without copy and paste (integrations from the Standard plan).
Choose SemChat if
- You first need to know what is slowing your site down: SemChat runs a technical audit, reads your backlinks and compares your competitors, which Surfer says it doesn't do.
- You want to ask your questions in plain English, like you would ask a person, and leave with an action plan sorted by priority.
- You want to start at €0 with no credit card: the Free plan has every feature, with a quota that one full audit used up on October 29, 2026.
- Your budget is tight: SemChat's Starter costs €20 a month before VAT, against €59 for Discovery, Surfer's entry plan, as shown from France.

How we work: SemChat is the only one of the two we tested on a real account (an audit run on October 29, 2026), and its buttons on this page are affiliate links. We have no affiliate link with Surfer. Surfer is described from its official pages and help center, read on October 29 and 30, 2026.
Surfer SEO vs SemChat: the verdict in three lines
- You write a lot of content: Surfer. Its editor scores each paragraph as you type, and its AI drafts articles.
- You first need to know what is wrong with your site: SemChat. One sentence starts a technical audit, a backlink check and a competitor review.
- You want to start without a credit card: SemChat’s Free plan, knowing that a single full audit used up its monthly quota in our test.
Two different jobs: writing pages or diagnosing your site
These two tools are often listed side by side, but they solve different problems. Surfer says so itself on the page it keeps for AI assistants: it is “Not a chatbot or a general-purpose AI assistant” (AI Instructions, read on October 30, 2026). The same page adds that it is not a backlink index or a technical-SEO crawler. Surfer picked its job and sticks to it.
Surfer: a content editor with a real-time score
Surfer’s Content Editor is the heart of the product. You enter a keyword. Surfer reads the pages in Google’s top 10 for your country and the pages AI tools cite most. It turns them into an outline, terms and topics to cover. Then it grades your draft live with a Content Score, which mixes SEO signals and your chances of being cited by AI. Write a paragraph, watch the score move.

SemChat: a site diagnosis you get by asking
SemChat starts from your site, not from a blank page. On October 29, 2026, we typed one sentence asking for an SEO audit of plugkit-avis.com and a clear action plan by priority. In about 3 minutes, SemChat read the pages, ran a full crawl, checked positions, the backlink profile and ten competitors. Then it returned three actions: create a contact page that returned a 404 error, make the titles of each language version different, and expand a thin comparison page.

Or use both: diagnose with SemChat, write with Surfer
The two tools can follow each other. SemChat tells you which pages to fix, which keywords to aim for and where competitors beat you. Then you write or rewrite those pages in Surfer’s Content Editor, with a score to guide you. For a small site, SemChat alone may be enough. For a team that publishes every week, the pair makes sense.
Surfer and SemChat side by side, as of October 29, 2026
Each cell comes from Surfer’s official pages or from SemChat’s pricing page and our test. When a page says nothing, we write “not mentioned”, never “not offered”.
| Criterion | Surfer | SemChat |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Content editor with a live score, AI article writing | SEO assistant by conversation: audit, keywords, backlinks, action plan |
| Free plan | No; separate free tools (Keyword Surfer, AI Detector, limited Humanizer) | Free at €0, no card, every feature, small quota |
| Trial | 7 days of the Pro plan, card required, no automatic cancellation | None: the Free plan plays that role |
| Entry price, as shown from France | Discovery: €59 a month, €49 billed yearly, before VAT | Starter: €20 a month, €16 billed yearly |
| Technical site audit | No: “Not a […] technical-SEO crawler” | Yes: full crawl in our test |
| Backlink analysis | No: “Not a backlink index” | Yes: backlink profile in the audit |
| Brand tracking in AI answers | Yes: 5 AI engines, daily from AI Search Analytics or Pro | Unknown for now (announced as planned) |
| Chat | Surfy, to rework a selected passage | The whole interface |
| MCP | Official MCP server, from AI Search Analytics or Pro | MCP client: connect a server of your choice (not tested) |
| Data | Unnamed “trusted data partners”, your Search Console | Haloscan in France, unnamed providers elsewhere |
| Publisher | Surfer Sp. z o.o., Wrocław, Poland | ARCHI301, Nice, France (same company as Haloscan) |
A word on SemChat’s data, since you are probably not in France. SemChat relies on Haloscan data for France; Haloscan and SemChat share a publisher. Outside France, it uses a mix of keyword data providers it doesn’t name (e-mail from Haloscan, October 29, 2026). So the numbers behind your American keywords don’t come from Haloscan.
Technical audit and backlinks: outside Surfer’s scope
Surfer’s AI Instructions page is clear: “Not a backlink index, technical-SEO crawler, or Core Web Vitals tool.” Its Content Audit reads your Search Console to track the positions and traffic of your pages, which is useful, but it doesn’t crawl your site for errors. Surfer’s 2019 Regulations still list “Backlink” among its core features; the newer page says otherwise.
SemChat’s audit covered exactly that ground: crawl, backlink profile, competitors and the gap with five of them.

Keyword research and domain analysis in Surfer and SemChat
Surfer’s Keyword Research comes with the Standard plan: clusters, search intent and 12 months of volumes “from Surfer’s trusted data partners”. Discovery doesn’t include it. Its free Keyword Surfer extension shows volumes inside Google results. SemChat includes keyword research and domain analysis in every plan, Free included. One caution from our tests: SemChat’s search volumes often differ from other sources, so check a number before you build a page on it.
Chatting with each tool: Surfy for your text, SemChat for your whole site
Surfy lives inside Surfer’s Content Editor. You select a passage and ask it, in natural language, to rephrase, shorten or add an example. “Surfy Agent”, which would build strategies and reports on request, is announced as “(soon)” with no date. To drive all of Surfer by chat today, you go through Claude or ChatGPT and Surfer’s MCP server.

Brand visibility in AI search: Surfer’s AI Tracker, SemChat’s plans
This is a clear Surfer win. Its AI Tracker checks your brand every day in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, with cited sources, sentiment and the gap with competitors. It collects answers from the apps themselves, not from APIs. The Standard plan only tracks ChatGPT, weekly. SemChat promises nothing on this today: AI visibility tracking is announced as planned.
Surfer vs SemChat pricing
Read from France, Surfer’s English pricing page shows euros, before VAT: Discovery at €59 a month (€49 billed yearly), AI Search Analytics at €95, Standard at €119, Pro at €219, Peace of Mind at €359, and Enterprise on quote. Data missing: the dollar prices a US visitor sees (planned source: the pricing page read from the United States). Every plan is detailed on our Surfer SEO price page.

The subscription trap: a trial that does not cancel itself, and erased data
Each “Start for Free” button opens a 7-day trial of the Pro plan. You enter your card at checkout. Surfer’s help center warns: “The trial does not cancel automatically.” After 7 days, the plan you picked starts and your card is charged.

When a subscription ends, another help article says: “All your previously created Content Editors, Audits, tracked Sites, and all other work are completely erased.” Surfer’s Regulations, on the other hand, keep access to the last three months of results. The two official pages disagree, so export what you want to keep before you stop.
SemChat’s Free plan and the promo code
SemChat’s pricing page reads: “Every feature, in every plan. Just pick your monthly usage.” The Free plan costs €0: “Try semchat with no credit card”. Starter is €20 a month, Pro 5x €100, Pro 20x €200. The €20 became €24 with French VAT on our first invoice, so these prices are before tax too. The catch: our single full audit used 100% of the Free plan’s monthly quota. All plans are on our SemChat pricing page.

How to test Surfer and SemChat before you pay
Surfer: at checkout, pick the plan you would accept to pay if you forget to cancel. Put the 7th day in your calendar. Canceling during the trial expires the account and you lose access to what you created, so export first.
SemChat: open a Free account and run your audit on your most important site. That single audit may use up the month’s quota: in our test, the counter showed 100% until its reset on November 28.

Frequently asked questions
What are some alternatives to Surfer SEO?
For writing: Frase, whose 7-day trial needs no card, and Semji, sold after a demo. For broader suites with content tools: SE Ranking and Semrush. For a site diagnosis by conversation: SemChat, ChatSEO or BotSEO. Our Surfer SEO alternative guide sorts them by need, with facts read on October 29, 2026.
Is SEO dead, or still evolving with AI search?
It is evolving. Both tools in this comparison now measure AI answers: Surfer tracks your brand in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, and scores your text for its chances of being cited by AI. SemChat still starts from classic signals (crawl, positions, backlinks); its AI visibility tracking is announced as planned.
What is the difference between SEO and SEM?
SEO earns free visits from search results by improving your pages. SEM usually means paying for ads in those results. Surfer and SemChat are both SEO tools: neither one buys or manages ads.
Is Semrush a reputable alternative to Surfer?
Yes, but for a different use. Semrush is a full suite (keywords, site audit, backlinks, rank tracking) with a Free plan of 10 reports a day and no card. Its writing tools sit in a Content toolkit billed on top of the SEO plan. Surfer stays focused on writing (Semrush and Surfer official pages, October 29, 2026).
Do Surfer and SemChat come from the same company?
No. Surfer is published by Surfer Sp. z o.o. in Wrocław, Poland. SemChat is published by ARCHI301 in Nice, France, the same company that publishes Haloscan.
