Surfer SEO alternatives: for writing, and for seeing your whole site

The right Surfer SEO alternative depends on what you miss in Surfer. You mainly write and want a trial without a card: Frase. You run a larger content team: Semji, sold after a demo. You want a full suite with a content editor inside: SE Ranking or Semrush. You want to start free, with a site diagnosis you get by asking: SemChat. And if you publish a lot, Surfer remains an excellent editor. Facts read on October 29, 2026.

This page is part of the guide: best free SEO tools

Verdict

Surfer is a strong content editor: it scores your text in real time and tracks your brand in AI answers. But it runs no technical audit and has no backlink index, offers no free plan, and erases your work when you stop paying. To stay on writing, Frase offers a trial with no card. For a full suite with a content editor inside, look at SE Ranking or Semrush. To start at €0 with no card and a site diagnosis by conversation: SemChat.

How we work: SemChat is the only tool on this page we tested on a real account (an audit run on October 29, 2026), and its buttons are affiliate links. SemChat is published by ARCHI301 in Nice, France, the company behind Haloscan. Every other tool is described from its official pages, read on October 29 and 30, 2026. When a page says nothing about a feature, we write “not mentioned”, never “not offered”.

Best Surfer SEO alternative for your profile: the verdict

There is no single best Surfer SEO alternative. There is the one that fills the gap you feel. Most people who leave Surfer want one of three things: a cheaper or easier way to write, a tool that sees the whole site, or a way to start without paying.

Surfer SEO alternatives compared, as of October 29, 2026

Your need Tool Why Entry price read on October 29, 2026
Write, with a trial and no card Frase An agent that researches, writes and publishes; site audit included $49 a month, $39 billed yearly

Frase publishes its prices in dollars. Surfer, SE Ranking, Semrush and SemChat showed euros when read from France; data missing: the dollar prices a US visitor sees for Surfer, SE Ranking and Semrush (planned source: their pricing pages read from the United States).

What Surfer is, and why people look elsewhere

Before you switch, know what you would leave behind, and what you would gain.

Surfer calls itself an “AI Visibility Platform”. The page it maintains for AI assistants draws its limits clearly: Surfer is “Not a chatbot or a general-purpose AI assistant”, and “Not a backlink index, technical-SEO crawler, or Core Web Vitals tool” (AI Instructions, read on October 30, 2026).

Its official pages don’t always agree. Surfer’s 2019 Regulations still list “Backlink” among its core features. Its homepage promises visibility in Claude, while the AI Instructions page asks AI tools not to state that Surfer’s AI Tracker monitors Claude. We follow the most recent page, verified on August 22, 2026.

No free plan, a trial with a card, and data erased when you stop

Surfer has no free plan. Read from France, the entry plan, Discovery, costs €59 a month or €49 a month billed yearly, before VAT. It leaves out keyword research, integrations and AI tracking. The full grid is on our Surfer SEO price page.

The 7-day trial of the Pro plan needs your card, and “The trial does not cancel automatically.” When a subscription ends, Surfer’s help center says: “All your previously created Content Editors, Audits, tracked Sites, and all other work are completely erased.” Its Regulations, on the other hand, keep access to the last three months of results. The two pages disagree; plan your exports either way.

What Surfer keeps: a real-time content score and AI brand tracking

Be fair to Surfer. Its Content Editor grades your draft live against Google’s top 10 and the pages AI tools cite. Surfer AI writes a full article in about 3 minutes, in 29 languages. From AI Search Analytics or Pro, its AI Tracker checks your brand every day in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. Add an official MCP server, a free WordPress plugin and up to 10 seats. If you publish a lot, few tools on this page match that writing workflow.

Surfer’s new address: surferseo.com became surfer.ai

If you look for Surfer at surferseo.com, you land on surfer.ai: the old domain redirects with a permanent 301, keeping the page path (checked on October 29, 2026). Same company, same product. Its help center still lives at docs.surferseo.com, and its MCP server at mcp.surferseo.com.

What to look for in a Surfer SEO alternative

Ask yourself four questions before you pick a tool.

  1. Do you need to write, or to know what to fix? Writing tools score your text. Diagnosis tools crawl your site, read your backlinks and compare your competitors. Surfer is in the first group.
  2. Can you start without a card? Surfer, Frase and Semrush offer 7-day trials; Frase’s needs no card, Surfer’s does. SE Ranking gives 14 days without a card. Semrush, Ubersuggest, Ahrefs and SemChat have lasting free plans.
  3. Who will use it? Surfer and Semji are built for content teams. SemChat targets people who are not SEO experts and would rather ask than read reports.
  4. Where does the data come from? Surfer gets its search volumes from “trusted data partners” it doesn’t name. SemChat uses Haloscan data in France and a mix of unnamed providers elsewhere, so for American keywords, the numbers don’t come from Haloscan.

A word of caution on the lists you will find on Google: several of them are written by tool vendors, such as SE Ranking or Nightwatch, which sell competing products. That is also true of this page, since we are affiliated with SemChat; that’s why every fact here comes with its source and date.

Surfer SEO competitors for writing: Frase and Semji

Frase: an agent that researches, writes and publishes

Frase sells a writing agent: it builds briefs from ranking pages, drafts in your brand voice, scores SEO live in the editor and can publish for you. Its official prices are in dollars: Starter at $49 a month ($39 billed yearly), Professional at $129 ($103), Scale at $299 ($239), Enterprise on quote. No free plan, but a 7-day trial without a card. Frase also includes a Site Auditor and backlink tools that Surfer doesn’t have, plus AI visibility tracking that starts with ChatGPT and Google AI on Starter. Its site is in English only, and it writes in “70+ languages and locale variants”. One point to check before you pay: its terms say “All fees paid are final”.

Semji: content and AI visibility for larger teams

Semji, based in Lyon, France, targets marketing and content teams in mid-size and large companies. Its editor scores content on seven families of criteria, and its AI visibility hub replays prompts daily in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and DeepSeek. Like Surfer, it states its limits: “The Semji platform does not do technical SEO or link building.” And there is no public price: “Semji does not publish a price list or a self-serve checkout.”

Where Semji goes further than Surfer is in choosing what to work on: it ranks your existing pages by potential gain in traffic, conversions and revenue, using your Search Console and GA4. Its site exists in six languages, including English and French. Its trial is unclear: “Try it for free” buttons lead to a sign-up page, while Semji’s own comparison with Semrush says “No public price and no free trial”. Ask during the demo.

Broader suites with content tools: SE Ranking and Semrush

SE Ranking: a full suite with its own Content Editor

SE Ranking bundles what Surfer leaves out: a Website Audit that crawls your site and ranks issues by severity, a Backlink Checker and backlink monitoring, daily rank tracking. It also has a Content Editor with a real-time score and an AI Writer, with 25 or 50 articles depending on the plan. Read from France, Core costs €109 a month (€87.20 billed yearly) and Growth €235 (€188). Its FAQ says: “There’s no permanent free plan, but you can evaluate the platform with a free 14-day trial (no card required).” An official MCP server is included in every plan, so you can query SE Ranking from Claude or ChatGPT, and Core already tracks 25 AI prompts a day across 5 engines. Our SE Ranking alternative guide goes further.

Semrush: a Content toolkit on top of the SEO plan

Semrush is a full suite with a Free plan: no card, 1 demo project and 10 reports a day. Its SEO plan costs €134 a month (€112.52 billed yearly) as shown from France, with keyword research, competitor analysis, site audit and rank tracking. Writing tools live in a separate Content toolkit (topic finder, SEO brief generator, article generator), from €57.54 a month billed yearly, on top of the SEO plan. Semrush is run by Semrush Inc. in Boston, and Adobe completed its acquisition on April 28, 2026. Its trials last 7 days on most plans and ask for a card. Read our Semrush alternative guide for more.

Free Surfer SEO alternatives

Keyword Surfer: the free extension Surfer still offers

You don’t need a Surfer plan to use part of Surfer. Keyword Surfer, a “Free Chrome Extension for Keyword Research”, shows search volume, cost per click and keyword ideas inside Google results. It needs no Surfer account and covers 70 countries. Surfer claims “600,000+ users”. It also offers a limited free AI Detector and Humanizer: 500 words without an account, 1,000 with one.

Free plans that last: Ubersuggest, Semrush and Ahrefs

  • Ubersuggest Free: no time limit, but 3 searches or reports a day, 1 project, 25 tracked keywords. Our Ubersuggest alternatives guide compares it.
  • Semrush Free: 10 reports a day, no card.
  • Ahrefs Free: for your own verified sites, with Site Explorer, Site Audit and an AI Content Helper limited to 1 document a month. Ahrefs offers no trial. See our Ahrefs alternative guide.

Other assistants you can talk to: ChatSEO and BotSEO

If what you liked in Surfer was Surfy, and you wish you could talk to the whole tool, two more assistants work by conversation. Both crawl your site, which Surfer doesn’t.

ChatSEO connects to your Search Console and answers in plain words with an action plan sorted by impact. It can publish to WordPress and has an official MCP server from its Pro plan. Its site is in English and French. There is no free plan: the 7-day trial with 30 credits needs a card, with a reminder at least 3 days before the first charge. Starter costs €29 a month before VAT, and its pricing page says prices are “identical in USD”.

BotSEO offers seven named agents you query in plain language, including one that crawls each page for Core Web Vitals, 404 errors and redirects, and another that analyzes your backlinks. Its free plan (Découverte on the French site) needs no card and gives 5 AI actions a month; Starter costs €29 before VAT. Its English site is botseo.io, and it “charges in euros (EUR) on every plan, wherever you are”.

SemChat: diagnose your site before you write

SemChat fills the gap Surfer leaves on purpose. On October 29, 2026, we typed one sentence asking for an SEO audit of plugkit-avis.com and an action plan by priority. In about 3 minutes, SemChat read the pages, ran a full crawl, checked positions, the backlink profile and ten competitors, and measured the gap with five of them. It returned three actions: create a missing contact page, make the titles of each language version different, and expand a thin comparison page.

What SemChat doesn’t do as well: its search volumes often differ from other sources, so check a number before you rely on it, and its AI visibility tracking is only announced as planned. For writing a page line by line with a live score, Surfer stays ahead. The full test is in our SemChat review, and the point-by-point duel on our Surfer SEO vs SemChat page.

SemChat costs: the Free plan, then €20 a month

SemChat’s pricing page reads: “Every feature, in every plan. Just pick your monthly usage.” The Free plan costs €0 (“Try semchat with no credit card”). Starter is €20 a month (€16 billed yearly), Pro 5x €100, Pro 20x €200. The €20 became €24 with French VAT on our first invoice. The catch: our single full audit used 100% of the Free plan’s monthly quota. All plans are on our SemChat pricing page.

If you write a lot, keep Surfer for writing and add SemChat for the diagnosis. Otherwise, the best Surfer SEO alternative is the one that fills your gap: a trial without a card, a technical audit, or a tool you can simply talk to.

Frequently asked questions

Is Surfer SEO legit?

Yes. Surfer is published by Surfer Sp. z o.o., a company registered in Wrocław, Poland. It has operated since 2018 and claims 150,000+ customers from 159+ countries (official pages, October 29, 2026). Being legit doesn't make it the right tool for every job: by its own description, it is not a technical-SEO crawler or a backlink index.

How do you use Surfer SEO?

You open a Content Editor on your target keyword. Surfer reads Google's top 10 and the pages AI tools cite, gives you an outline and terms to cover, then scores your draft as you write. You can let Surfer AI write a first version, rework passages with Surfy, and publish to WordPress or Google Docs from the Standard plan.

Is there a free alternative to Surfer SEO?

Yes, several with lasting free plans: Semrush Free (10 reports a day, no card), Ubersuggest Free (3 searches a day), Ahrefs Free for your own verified sites, and SemChat Free with every feature, though one full audit used up its monthly quota in our test on October 29, 2026. Surfer itself offers the free Keyword Surfer extension.

Is Surfer SEO free at all?

Not as a plan. The cheapest plan, Discovery, costs €59 a month (€49 billed yearly) before VAT, as shown from France on October 29, 2026; dollar prices for US visitors are not confirmed yet. The 7-day trial needs a card. Free tools exist on the side: Keyword Surfer, a limited AI Detector and Humanizer, and an emailed AI visibility audit.
