Automated SEO: what an assistant does for you, and what stays yours
Automated SEO, with an assistant like SemChat, means this: the tool reads your data and proposes what to do; you check, decide and publish. Tested on 29 October and 30, 2026, on real sites, it read Search Console clicks correctly, but it also misjudged search volumes and suggested work that was already done. Here's what it does well, what stays yours, and what it costs.
This page is part of the guide: SemChat tutorial

Automated SEO sounds like a tool that ranks your site while you sleep. What you actually get is more modest, and more useful: an assistant reads your numbers, proposes what to do, and you decide.
This page is part of our SemChat tutorial. It brings together five SemChat skills that deal with strategy: SEO strategy, competitor analysis, local SEO, new site launch and indexing. Four were tested on 29 October 2026, on real sites, and the New site launch skill on 30 October 2026.
I ran every test in French, on French sites, with the interface in French, so SemChat’s answers below are translated. How it words them in English is missing data (planned source: a test in English). The SemChat buttons on this page are affiliate links.
Automated SEO: what the word really means

In practice, automated SEO means handing over the reading and sorting: pulling your data, checking pages, estimating searches, ranking what to fix first. The deciding and the publishing stay with you.
SemChat fits that pattern. It reads data and writes proposals; it published nothing in our tests. It lists WordPress and Webflow connectors for publishing to a site, but they weren’t connected on our account and weren’t tested (app reading, 29 October 2026).
SEO automation tools: what they automate for you
Here’s what one SEO automation tool took over for me, from a single sentence. SemChat pulled my Search Console properties, my domain’s rankings, a comparison of two periods, my top queries and pages, then read the two pages closest to page one.
That’s the clicking through reports you’d otherwise do yourself. It automates the reading and the first draft of a plan. Judging whether its own numbers are right is still on you.
SEO automation software and AI SEO tools: the difference
Classic SEO software gives you reports: you open a dashboard and read it. An AI SEO tool like SemChat takes a question in plain words and picks its own tools. When I asked “Comment avoir plus de visiteurs ?” (How do I get more visitors?), it chose its SEO strategy skill by itself.
The catch comes with the AI part. Google explains that generative models “don’t retrieve facts, but predict a likely sequence of words based on their training data” (Google’s guidance on AI-generated content, read 30 October 2026). That’s why you check what it says.
What an assistant can safely do for you
It reads your data and proposes; you decide
- 1 Read the assistant reads your Search Console and pages
- 2 Propose it returns a few actions, with their source
- 3 Check you verify every number and every address
- 4 Publish you change your site yourself
- 5 Measure a few weeks later, in Search Console
On 29 October 2026, I typed that vague question in a new chat. SemChat picked its SEO strategy skill on its own, checked that my Search Console was connected, then read my queries and pages.

Its numbers were right: 8 clicks and 533 impressions, the same as a direct pull from my Search Console. It labelled each number, Search Console as the source for clicks, “estimated volume” for searches.
It also corrects itself when you give it precise facts. On indexing, after my follow-up, it wrote “J’avais tort sur trois points” (I was wrong on three points). And it gets to the point: I had set a rule of three actions at most, it kept to it and named the one to start that week.
SEO content automation: drafts you still review
An assistant can draft a content brief, a block of internal links or a page outline. Publishing pages in bulk is another matter. Google is clear: “using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users may violate Google’s spam policy on scaled content abuse” (read 30 October 2026).
Same page: “It is critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing.” The content skills, from briefs to keyword clusters, are covered in our guide to the SEO content tool.
What stays yours: checking, deciding, publishing
Cross-check search volumes before you trust them
SemChat’s search volumes are estimates, and they often differ from other tools, in both directions. Two examples from 29 October 2026, French market:
- “statistiques instagram” (Instagram statistics): 655 searches a month per SemChat, 210 per DataForSEO (Google Ads data);
- “zoho social”: 40 per SemChat, 320 per DataForSEO.
In France, SemChat relies on data from Haloscan, a tool focused on French data (email from Adrian Delmarre, of Haloscan, 29 October 2026). Two tools, two estimates: cross-check before you decide to write a page, or to drop one.

It took a follow-up to get that line, during the keyword clustering test.
Another gap: it sometimes suggests work that already exists. One “missing” topic from the competitor analysis was already covered on my site, and a page to “add” to the sitemap was already in it. Open your sitemap before you act.
No tool can promise you rankings
Google puts it plainly: “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings” (Do You Need an SEO?, read 30 October 2026).

SemChat says so itself, at the end of a link campaign plan tested on 29 October 2026: “Aucun chiffre de position ou de trafic n’est promis” (No ranking or traffic figure is promised). Link campaigns belong to the family of the link building tool.
So you review, you check every address and every number, you publish, and you write down the date.

What automated SEO costs, free options included
SemChat from €0, then €20 a month
SemChat’s pricing page says “Every feature, in every plan. Just pick your monthly usage.” Free is €0, Starter “€20 /mo”, Pro 5x €100 and Pro 20x €200 a month (pricing page, 30 October 2026).

The Free plan’s catch is a short quota. One full SEO audit of our test site used 100% of it for the month (test of 29 October 2026); that audit is covered in our automated SEO audit guide. The skills on this page were measured on the Starter plan:
| Tested | Quota used | |
|---|---|---|
| SEO strategy | yes, on plugkit-avis.com | 2.2 points, with an on-page audit |
| Competitor analysis | yes, on plugkit-avis.com | 6.4 points |
| Local SEO | yes, on occirank.fr | 2.1 points |
| New site launch | yes, on plugkit-avis.com (30 October 2026) | 2.9 points |
| Indexing | yes, on plugkit-avis.com | missing data |
For indexing, the quota moved 22.4 points for that test and the next one, with no reading in between, so its own share is missing data. All plans are on the SemChat pricing page.
The free option that matters most comes from Google. Search Console is “a free service offered by Google that helps you monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot your site’s presence in Google Search results” (Search Console Help, read 30 October 2026). It’s where SemChat gets its most reliable numbers, so connect it before any assistant. If you’re weighing a tool against outside help, our SEO cost page compares what agencies, freelancers and doing it yourself cost.
How to create an SEO strategy: start from your real data
You type a vague question, “Comment avoir plus de visiteurs ?” (How do I get more visitors?), and SemChat picks its SEO strategy skill on its own. It read my Search Console, kept measured numbers apart from estimates, and gave three levers, one to start that week. It got a volume wrong (655 searches a month, against 210 per DataForSEO) and suggested a language setup already in place; no 12-month roadmap either, despite its description. Cost: 2.2 points of the Starter quota for the whole lesson. The full method is on the page how to create an SEO strategy.
Competitor analysis SEO tools: find your real rivals in Google
I named two sites that rank ahead of mine in Google and asked for five topics at most, each with the address of the rival page. SemChat returned five topics with working addresses, and four were truly missing from my site. But its “check done” relied on the site’s known keywords, not its sitemap: one topic was already covered, and its volume for “zoho social” was eight times too low. Cost: 6.4 points of the Starter quota. The full test, next to other tools described from their own pages and not tested, is on the page about competitor analysis SEO tools.
Local SEO tool: what SemChat saw, and missed, for a local business
I tested it on occirank.fr, the site of my SEO consulting business in Toulouse, France, with the skill’s template sentence, “Comment être trouvé par les clients près de chez moi ?” (How do I get found by customers near me?), plus my trade and area. SemChat caught real inconsistencies: legal pages and a share image pointing to another name and domain. It misread the structured data (the address was there), assumed I had no Google Business Profile without looking, since it has no connector for it, and proposed an “agency” page for a solo consultant. Cost: 2.1 points of the Starter quota. The five steps are on the local SEO tool page.
SEO for a new website: what to check before and after launch
We tested SemChat’s New site launch skill on 30 October 2026, on the Starter plan. The sentence, typed in French: “plugkit-avis.com a moins d’un an : vérifie les bases et donne-moi le plan des 90 prochains jours.” (plugkit-avis.com is less than a year old: check the basics and give me the plan for the next 90 days.) SemChat picked the right skill on its own, then read its stored site analysis, the review page, Google’s results for two queries and the backlink profile. In about 3 minutes it returned a week-by-week plan up to 28 January 2027, and three actions for the week.
What it got right: useful rankings from its own tools (the English page first for “avis plugkit” on Google France) and careful link advice. What it got wrong, checked on the live site that day: it asked us to add hreflang tags that were already there and to create a contact page that was already live. It read the previous day’s analysis, not the live site. Cost: 2.9 points of the Starter plan’s quota (57.8%, then 60.7%). The full test, with Google’s launch steps (before, on and after launch day), is in our guide to SEO for a new website.
URL indexer or Search Console: how SemChat checks what Google indexed
Before you pay for any URL indexer, Search Console tells you for free which pages Google kept. I launched a technical audit focused on indexing, and SemChat switched to its Indexing skill on its own. It read Search Console and inspected five pages, all indexed: correct. Its first diagnosis was wrong on three points; after my follow-up, it admitted it and sorted the pages into three cases. Its final sitemap actions were still wrong: add a page already listed and dead addresses, create a file that already existed. Cost: missing data for this test alone. The details are on the URL indexer page.
My verdict on automated SEO with SemChat: a good data reader and a good sorter of leads, starting from your real numbers and willing to be corrected. A poor judge of its own search volumes, and a doer you have to watch.
What stays yours: cross-checking, opening your sitemap, publishing, measuring. The full verdict is in our SemChat review, and your first request, step by step, in the SemChat tutorial.
Frequently asked questions
What is automated SEO?
Automated SEO means handing the reading and sorting work to a tool: it pulls your Search Console data, checks your pages, estimates search volumes and proposes a few actions. You still check those proposals, decide and publish. In our test on 29 October 2026, SemChat read the site's Search Console clicks correctly but put one search volume at three times the figure from another tool.
Can SEO be fully automated?
No. Google warns that “using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users may violate Google's spam policy on scaled content abuse” (Google's guidance on AI-generated content, read 30 October 2026). It also says “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google” (Do You Need an SEO?, same date). A tool can read and propose; you check, decide and publish.
Is Surfer SEO a legit automation tool?
We haven't tested Surfer, so we don't rate it. Its own pages (our dated record of 29 October 2026) list content tools such as a Content Score, the Surfy writing assistant and a Content Audit, with WordPress, Google Docs, Contentful and Zapier integrations from the Standard plan; the entry plan, Discovery, costs €59 a month excluding VAT. Google adds that it “doesn't evaluate or endorse third-party SEO tools” (Do You Need an SEO?, read 30 October 2026).
Is automated SEO free?
Partly. Google Search Console is “a free service offered by Google” (Search Console Help, read 30 October 2026), and SemChat has a Free plan at €0 with “Every feature, in every plan.” (pricing page, 30 October 2026). The Free quota is short, though: one full SEO audit of our test site used all of it for the month. Starter costs €20 a month.
Does SemChat publish changes to my site?
Not in our tests: it read data and wrote proposals, which I applied myself. It lists WordPress and Webflow connectors for publishing to a site, which were not connected on our account and were not tested (app reading, 29 October 2026). Review every proposal before it goes live.
